A replacement for the original seal (see section on the previous seal and flag)  was voted on by the Commonwealth Games Federation in 2001.  When Mr. Hooper was asked how the Ceremonial Flag would be impacted, he described the replacement flag which is illustrated below:

According to the CGF's Brands Standards Manual (courtesy of Mr. Hooper), the logo is described as thus:
The horizontal black bar visually represents the Game's effort to raise the bar of sport for all humanity. The bar is supported on either end by two broad, hemispheric strokes, and in the center by three converging points, which represents the trinity of ideals the Games embraces: Humanity, Equality, and Destiny.

The Previous Seal and Flag 1978-1998

The basic design of the seal was first created in 1952 for the newly renamed British Empire and Commonwealth Games. This version of the seal was voted in by the Games Federation at the End of the Christchurch Commonwealth Games in 1974.

First used at the 1978 Edmonton (Canada) Commonwealth Games, the flag and seal was last used at a Commonwealth Games in 1998 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
